Vince Gilligan Discloses He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would become a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit program wrapping up—and Season 2 officially in the works—the writers' room reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get swayed by the constant speculation and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like force fed your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Will the showrunner Know the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the writers aren’t being guided by public opinion, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… in a way.
“We have some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a decent plan for a better idea. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.
Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
