Two Victims Revealed in Brown University Incident as Police Continue Manhunt for Gunman.

The pair of scholars who died in Saturday’s violent attack at Brown University were being remembered Monday – as a manhunt for their shooter carried on following the discharge by authorities in Rhode Island of the sole person questioned in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The student Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was remembered as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, as stated by the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a gathering on Sunday.

Her role included the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of the College Republicans organization, the group said. The White House press secretary also shared condolences publicly, remarking: “There are no words. Keeping in mind her kin and peers, above all her mom and dad.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The other deceased individual was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his initial year at the renowned school, according to relatives.

Umurzokov’s identity was confirmed by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. His ambitions were lofty of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and assisting patients,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a memorial statement.

The Shooting Incident

Nine other people were injured in Saturday’s attack in the school of engineering of Brown’s university in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.

Officials stated on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man taken into custody in a police operation at a Hampton Inn about 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was released from custody.

“We have a murderer out there,” said Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

He continued, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you must reassess and head another way, and this is precisely what occurred over the last approximately one day.”

Ongoing Concerns

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate renewed concern for our community”.

The gunman began shooting inside a room in the engineering facility on Saturday, shooting over four dozen bullets from a handgun, a authority informed the media outlet.

Officers that searched the lodging seized two firearms and two ammunition clips when the individual was taken into custody, the news agency reported.

The Wounded Victims

Regarding the nine injured, one pupil was discharged from care, said Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in grave but unchanging health, and one remained in critical care, police said on Sunday.

Durham Academy, a private K-12 school in Durham, North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.

More Condolences

Cook was remembered at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only here growing up... but at Brown University she was a radiant presence in that institution as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the organization. “She was famed for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she served her chapter and fellow classmates,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the student's death in a message. “We extend our sincere condolences to Mr Umurzokov’s family, friends, and schoolmates and grieve for of his promising future.”

The weekend's murders at Brown, the nation’s seventh-oldest higher education institution with about over seven thousand undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, happened during one of at least 392 shooting incidents reported in the US so far in 2025, according to statistics.
