The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind many legendary styles worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
This news arrives just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
