Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.
