SNAP Payments Scheduled to End for Over 40 Million Throughout Prolonged Government Closure

Federal agriculture authorities announced this past weekend that SNAP funds under one of the country’s largest welfare initiatives won't be issued during the coming month because of the continuing government funding lapse.

Shutdown Extends For Nearly Four Weeks

The funding lapse was in nearly a month as officials revealed the news, coming after demands from hundreds of Congressional Democrats urging the department to utilize emergency reserves to fund the upcoming nutrition payments.

“Ultimately, resources are exhausted,” officials announced. “Now, no payments will be distributed” on 1 November.

Widespread Impact

More than 41 million individuals count on these monthly payments, according to federal data. In certain states, including New Mexico, use of this assistance reaches one-fifth of the population.

A memo obtained by a major news agency showed that federal authorities would not access reserve funds to cover next month's assistance.

Political Stalemate

Republicans and Democrats remain deadlocked regarding how to support and resume the federal government.

Remarks from the director at a prominent policy organization noted that the administration could have acted to prepare in advance to prevent benefits from running out.

“Officials were able and expected to made moves earlier to get ready to use these funds,” the remarks concluded. “Conversely, they might decide against it in an effort to gain political advantage” while GOP lawmakers attempt to influence Democratic senators to support legislation that would reopen government operations.

Local Responses

Governors in Louisiana and Virginia declared states of emergency in recent days to make money available to address food insecurity preparing for nutrition assistance payments stopping next month.
