Paceman Gus Atkinson Compounds England's Injury Concerns.

'Major setback' for the touring side as Atkinson goes off suffering a hamstring problem.

Gus Atkinson further complicated the injury concerns plaguing England when he left the ground during Saturday's play of the Boxing Day Test in the Ashes series.

Atkinson felt a problem in his left hamstring after the final ball that he bowled during the morning session.

Team management reported the 27-year-old reported "discomfort" and would spend time away from the action in order to be assessed "during the day".

The concluding match of the series at the SCG starts at the end of the week.

The English side has been without strike bowlers one seamer due to knee trouble and Jofra Archer to a side strain on this Ashes tour.

Matthew Fisher was brought into the squad as injury reinforcement.

The seamer had a tough time in the opening two Tests, claiming a mere three wickets.

He was dropped from the previous Test, then recalled for the fourth Test as Archer's replacement.

Atkinson improved at the MCG, bagging two scalps in Australia's first innings, before adding 28 as a batsman as one of just three England players to get into double digits.

After bowling one over at the end of day one, he resumed the next day and dismissed the nightwatchman edging to the keeper.

Unfortunately, on the final ball of his spell, he sent down a slower ball to Travis Head and suddenly grabbed for his hamstring.

Atkinson returned to the side for the Boxing Day Test following his omission the Adelaide game.
