A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
