New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Still unsure,” he added. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. And again, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police released video stills Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
