Fury Erupts as Former President Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Draws Sharp Backlash

Individuals from both sides of the political divide and the Hollywood world are coming together to censure former President Donald Trump for his comments following the tragic passing of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Online Statement

After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on social media to label the late director as "anguished and struggling". The post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "because of the hostility he caused others through his massive, relentless, and incurable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments then pivoted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Law Enforcement Update and Detention

Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in connection with the case. It is reported his bond was set at a significant sum.

A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.

“What a vile and despicable statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, also condemned the remarks. Goldberg referenced previous rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Have you no shame? Can you get any lower?"

The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a sick man."

Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a despicable piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying the Reiners caused their own demise because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."

Criticism from Within Political Ranks

Some GOP lawmakers also expressed dismay.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". She also alluded to struggles with substance abuse and mental health some families face.

Another Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disgraceful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly dared members in his party to justify the statements.

The Director's Legacy and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump be reelected to power.

"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democracy crumble around the world."

Regardless of his strong criticisms, Reiner had in the past shown "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence without reservation after the killing of a different individual.

A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal

Adding a element of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the session, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" while posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
