Tim Southee's most recent Test for New Zealand was versus the English side in the final month of 2024.

England's bowling consultant Tim Southee is still working through the extent of his role will be during the upcoming Ashes series in the host nation.

The former Kiwi seamer is only likely to be present for the first Test because of his involvement in the International League T20 tournament, which starts on 2 December in the UAE.

The 36-year-old, aged 36, took up a position as the English team's fast bowling consultant in the warmer months after taking 391 scalps in 107 Test matches for the Kiwis.

Commenting as the English squad for the opening of three Twenty20 games against New Zealand was announced, Southee stated of his availability: "We are still evaluating the situation at the present time.

"We'll see what happens over the coming days."

England pace icon Broad had declared the Australian team as their "weakest squad since 2010", but Southee was in little doubt over the anticipated challenge during the contest, which starts on 21 November.

"I don't think there's at any time a bad Aussie side," Southee remarked.

"The team's attention is squarely on what we're trying to do. In my opinion the quality of [England's] team that's going out to Australia is brilliant.

"It ought to be an thrilling encounter, the Ashes. Not only [are|do] fans from both nations eagerly anticipate it, I think the whole cricket world is."

However, before the English team head to Perth for the first Ashes match, they take on New Zealand in Christchurch on Saturday.
