A Banner Year for Kicking The Sphere

I couldn't comprehend football until I watched it with my old man. The moment arrived during a visit to my parents' house smack in the heart of the World Cup frenzy. The Italian team was in contention, and that was a huge deal to my dad, an immigrant from the Abruzzo region. Even though I perpetually considered the sport boring, his energy was utterly infectious that it held my attention to the screen. The puzzle pieces clicked that day, instantly grasping all the thrilling nuances the sport had to offer and accepting its profound significance. It was crucial that Italy claim victory.

It's challenging to explain the appeal of athletic competitions to those who remain unconvinced. It takes to live through that perfect moment where everything clicks for yourself — or, at the very least, you need a knowledgeable mentor present to clarify the complex rules and expose the core essence of the sport. Evidence from this year shows that this is something a interactive experience can achieve. 2025 presented three great football games that analyzed the sport in very different, user-friendly manners.

The Cultural Touchstone: Despelote

The cornerstone title of that trio is Despelote. This indie game is a coming-of-age tale set in Ecuador. At first glance, it's a fairly standard story about a child maturing in the 2000s and finding his identity. However, all of this occurs against the canvas of an all-consuming cultural event: The country's team has made it for the World Cup, and it is the paramount thing happening in the protagonist's lives. Football games are on every display TV. They play during ceremonies. It's the sole topic anyone can discuss. Football is existence.

In this environment, we observe the main character mature. He isn't only navigating where he belongs at a social gathering, but where he belongs within his culture as well. The beautiful game is fundamental to his identity, and it's via the game that he uncovers himself as a devoted citizen. No game has gotten closer a video game has ever come to giving me insight into my own dad and the reason he was so enthralled to the tournament all those years ago.

The Bodily Mastery: Rematch

While Despelote focuses on the cultural weight of soccer, two other titles from this year encapsulate the nuances of the game itself in more approachable ways than standard simulators. Rematch, the newest game from the creators behind Sifu, explores the athleticism of soccer. The competitive title deconstructs the sport by transforming it into a high-speed contest played between few players. It draws cues from titles like Rocket League to create an accessible match that's built around tight teamwork and exquisite touch.

I became obsessed with Rematch for a few weeks this summer. It seemed simple during my initial playthroughs, but each occasion I picked it up, I found more depth. Instead of just basic kicking and passing, I mastered how to dodge around the other team to avoid a challenge. I mastered how to let go of the ball to stop someone from knocking it away. I drilled my tricks until I could elevate a flashy-looking move into a proper evasive action. These myriad subtle techniques helped me understand soccer in ways I couldn't possibly understand as a casual viewer. I walked away with a deeper respect for the central part body control plays in the game, recognizing what a physically demanding pursuit it truly is.

The Cerebral Game: Pup Champs

If Rematch revealed the athletic aspect of soccer, Pup Champs whimsically illustrated the strategic side. The newest release from the studio behind Golf Peaks, Pup Champs is a card-based soccer strategy title with puppies. Every challenge requires you to maneuver a few pups on a grid and guide the ball into a net. Straightforward, but the challenge comes from the fact that each dog has a particular movement style, they can only advance a limited number of tiles, and there are blockers to contend with. Solving a puzzle requires clever thinking and a firm grasp of the field. You get the impression like you're directing a high school soccer team, devising the ideal strategies to guide your dogs to a win. While not a serious version of the sports by any means, but it's a delightful companion piece to Rematch.

The Future of Sports Games

There were plenty of releases about soccer, as expected. Mainstream simulators arrived punctually and beloved management sims made their eagerly awaited debut. Yet, thanks to these particular titles, I spent 2025 thinking about soccer more than I have since. These titles allowed me to see the incredible skill that goes into a sport I'll probably never be skilled at (too much running!) and understand why soccer matters to so many people. It's a promising development in game design I hope to see grow, with more innovative takes to athletic titles that aim to express the spirit of a sport rather than copying it 1:1. Moreover, a handful of additional games did exactly that for different sports this year, whether it was the freeing bicycle races of Wheel World or the surreal odyssey of Skate Story. Whether or not you don't love sports, there are more and more games out there that are eager to invite you into the club.
